Why do people stutter?

Stuttering is now defined as a 'panic attack' over speech that starts in early childhood. Stuttering does not respond well to fluency training because the person already knows how to be fluent.

Do I get a refund if I still stutter?

We view speaking as similar to learning a sport or a musical instrument. The Stuttering Innovations courses, DVDs, CDs and Kits deliver easy to understand skills that you can use to recover from stuttering.
The skills we teach are similar to the skills you would learn when playing any sport or learning a musical instrument. The more you train in these skills the more your speaking skill level increases; it is up to the student to apply the skills and to practice them. We guarantee a positive result, and we guarantee the delivery of real skills that effectively address the problem of stuttering.

My stutter is mild, is this type of training necessary?

There are two types of stuttering: covert and overt.

Covert stuttering is when a person substitutes the words he or she has difficulty in saying for words which are not as difficult. A covert stutterer will try their hardest not to show the listener that they stutter. They may also simply avoid speaking when experiencing a speech block, or may stall, using ‘ums’, ‘ahs’ or other ‘filler’ words until the fear drops enough to get the word out.

Overt stuttering is when a person has difficulty in saying most, if not every word.
Even though covert and overt stutterers may sound different in practice, in theory they both suffer from the same fear of speaking. If the problems are not corrected, then stuttering will become a personality trait that will impact negatively on every aspect of the person’s life: their social, work and personal lives.

I have tried other therapies; why should I try this?

Stuttering Innovations understands stuttering. You will be trained by a person who has been a stutterer and has recovered from the affliction using the same skills they teach. You will be trained by a person who has been there, has been embarrassed, has been through the misery of being unable to express themselves fully, was held back, felt different, and felt they looked different, but now has overcome their stutter. We understand what you have been through, and we have the skills to transform you into a confident and skilled speaker.

Why a sporting approach?

To become a good sportsperson, you must have good physical skills, mental skills and discipline. With the Stuttering Innovations learning style, these same skills are required.
In any sport, our performance can be improved with effective mental and physical skills, and the more we practise these skills the better we become at this sport.
Likewise, with our speech, the more we practise our skills, the more skilled as a speaker we become.
